Want to know more about me?
I grew up essentially living a double life for most of my childhood. It sounds crazy, but if you grew up in foster care and have felt the shame that I have felt, I’m sure you can relate. From the outside looking in, I was a perfect: straight-A student, dedicated athlete, and proudly independent young woman. But behind closed doors, my real life consisted of a constant rotation of social workers and visitations. The shame and fear of being found out as a foster child ate me up for a long time — until I set myself free from it. Despite the fears and the chaos, I was always knew that the circumstances of my life wouldn’t be a reflection of the success of my future. After the loss of my mother, I became even more self-assured. After I transitioned out of my “what I then thought was adulthood” phase, I was unstoppable. I was sure of the direction my life was going to take, and became confident of where I would end up — a stronger, resilient, and brave young woman.

Getting there was not easy. At first, NOTHING worked out as I had initially planned. I envisioned becoming successful the “traditional way” — college, dead end part-time jobs, and full-time jobs that left me uninspired. I had the foresight to know that the path I was going down wasn’t for me, and so I did what any sane person would do: I changed gears. My decision to change directions literally cost me everything. In the blink of an eye, I found myself not knowing where I was going to live, how I was going to support myself or what was next.

That decision was one of the best decisions of my life.
